Liposuction
is the procedure that can help sculpt the patients body by removing
unwanted fat from localized areas, including the abdomen, hips, buttocks,
thighs, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck. The best candidates for liposuction
must have realistic expectations about how this procedure can best help
them. The patient should be as close to normal weight as possible and
have firm, elastic skin that has pockets of fat in certain areas. Through
a small incision, a narrow tube or cannula is inserted and used to "vacuum"
the fat layer that lies beneath the skin. The cannula is pushed then
pulled through the fat layer, thus breaking up the fat cells and suctioning
them out. The suction action is provided by a vacuum pump or large syringe,
depending on the surgeon's preference. If there are many sites being
suctioned, the surgeon will then move on to the next area, keeping the
incision sites as inconspicuous as possible. If the patient's expectations
are realistic, they will most likely be very pleased with the results
of the surgery. The patient may be more comfortable in their clothes
and more at ease with their body. We do stress that by eating a healthy
diet and getting regular exercise the patient will help maintain their
new shape. WHAT TO EXPECT After surgery the patient will experience
some fluid drainage from the small incisions where the cannula is inserted.
To control swelling and help the skin adhere to its new contours, the
patient is fitted with a snug elastic garment that is to be worn over
the treated areas for several weeks. Pain is usually minimal and can
be controlled with medications prescribed by the surgeon. The patient
may also experience some stiffness and may be sore for a few days.
